General Modeling Sites

Armorama.com

Armorama.com is a vast site, with lots more than just tanks!  There are sections devoted to aircraft, figures, warships, spacecraft, and dioramas as well.  Some very inspiring models here, as well as excellent how-to articles and reference photos.  Set aside a lot of time to dig through Armorama.com.

The Parts Yard Jean-Marc Perrault's website is a truly noble gesture.  On his site, modelers can look for parts that may have been lost, damaged, or are just needed to complete a project.  All this for no cost other than postage!  There is much more at The Parts Yard, so I highly recommend you take a look.

Aviation Modeling Sites

Airliners.net

A stunning resource - almost a quarter of a million photos on-line!  These photos cover almost every civil aircraft imaginable, from the Lockheed Model 10 Electra right up to today's 777s and A340s, along with some military aircraft, including airlifters like the C-130 and An-124.  Even bushplanes lurk in these pages.  Fortunately, there is an excellent search engine to navigate this mass of information.  Very highly recommended to anybody with an interest in civilian aircraft.

Dryden Flight Research Facility Photo Collection

Another amazing on-line photo collection, this one showcasing the many aircraft that NASA and its predecessor, NACA, have flown out of Edwards Air Force base for the past sixty years.  The quality of the images is superb, and you will be amazed at the variety of aircraft that they have flown over the years, from the exotic X-planes through to the Century Series of planes, the P-38, P-51, the A-5 Vigilante, and even the Tu-144 supersonic transport.  There are many interesting modeling subjects contained in these pages.

Armour Modeling Sites

1st Hussars

The 1st Hussars is our local armour unit, with a rich history in the Canadian Army.  This site provides a portal to a number of sites related to the 1st Hussars, including the official DND site and the 1st Hussar Museum and 1st Hussar Association sites.  IPMS London is currently working, under the direction of Dennis Glas, to build a collection of models representative of the 1st Hussars' history for the regimental museum.

Milifax

This neat site put together by Steve Guthrie has some great information on Canadian World War II armour, especially relating to the intricacies of camouflage and markings.  Some excellent photos are here, including a selection of original colour photos of Rams, Shermans, and more.

Modeling the US Army in WWII

Tim Streeter's site dedicated to all aspects of WWII US Army ground forces is an excellent and comprehensive resource for modelers of this important subject.  From vehicle and uniform references to a very useful list of available (and OOP) kits, accessories, and figures, there is something of use to anybody interested in American armour, infantry, and artillery from the Second World War.

The Russian Battlefield

This site is a wonderful resource for Soviet armour of the Great Patriotic War.  From first-person accounts to blueprint drawings, technical information on Soviet armour and artillery, colour profiles, and an outstanding collection of photographs, there is plenty of material for modelers interested in the Eastern Front.  Particularly noteworthy are the photo sections on the museum at Kubinka, Axis and Soviet destroyed AFVS, and captured enemy AFVs and Lend-Lease vehicles in Soviet service. Top-rate information.

Tankfive

This site, run by Niccolò Barbero, is Italy-based, but international in scope.  A great selection of dioramas, military vehicles and figures, combined with some useful walkarounds of real vehicles, give the military modeller plenty to look at (and it's dual-language, English and Italian, to boot).  I was particularly taken by nice models of the Italian M47 and the Centauro 8x8 armoured car (one cool vehicle!  Trumpeter, are you listening?).

Tanks2Scale: Military Vehicles in Detail

This site is an outstanding collection of military vehicle photographs taken in museums all over the world.  With thousands of photos of hundreds of vehicles from all nations and all eras, you are almost guaranteed to find something here that will help you.  Interestingly, the site is set up in such a way that anybody can contribute or write captions for the photos on the site.

Track 48

Garfield Ingram's website is devoted to one of the "forgotten fronts" of plastic modelling, 1/48 scale armour.  While many of us built this stuff in our formative years (I had almost the entire Aurora armour line and many of the Bandai kits), 1/48 is now almost the exclusive preserve of aircraft modellers.  As well as some inspiring models that show how well armour and aircraft can meet in this scale, Track 48 has also begun to bring out resin accessories for some of the old (but still pretty darned good) Bandai kits.  Take a look - perhaps you will be inspired to build something a little out of your range!

Prehistoric Animal Sites

Dino Hunter

Tracy Ford (of Prehistoric Times fame) is an accomplished artist of cool extinct animals, and has put together an excellent resource page on dinosaurs and the like.  Aside from a large collection of his drawings (proof that real life is far stranger than anything fiction can come up with in terms of animals!), this site also has an outstanding page of links to all aspects of palaeontology, prehistoric art, models, fossils, and more, as well as a great bibliography of recent academic articles on prehistoric animals.embers.

Dinosaurios.net

Don't let the language barrier get in the way of your enjoying the beautiful images in this Spanish site devoted to dinosaurs, particularly the giants that roamed South America.  The illustrations of Raul Martin are particularly striking and evocative of a lost age of magnificent animals.
